Tuo oli täysin neutraali toteamus, eikä sisältänyt minkäänlaista ihailua kyseistä tapahatumaa kohtaan. Onhan jalkapallokin urheilulajien kuningas ja kutsun sitä "kuningas jalkapalloksi", vaikka henkilökohtaisesti vihaan kyseistä lajia yli kaiken.

Sunday marks 9-year anniversary of deadly Columbine shootings

LITTLETON - April 20, 2008 marks the ninth anniversary of the deadly shootings at Columbine High School.

In 1999, two teens went on a rampage, killing 12 students and a teacher before shooting themselves.

A memorial service is being planned at Clement Park on Sunday for the victims.

Crosses will be brought to the park as they are each year. The public is invited for a prayer service around them.

A short ceremony will also take place at 11:21 a.m., the same time the tragedy occurred.

Nine years after Columbine, the new memorial draws locals and outsiders seeking peace and understanding.

Two teenage girls perch on a wall near the entrance, bathed in that fickle April warmth that can easily revert to winter, too young to remember that nine years ago the tragedy unfolded on just this sort of day.

They finish an after-school snack and then stroll the perimeter of the Columbine Memorial — slowly, because even after many visits, there is no other way.

They read the inscriptions they have read a dozen times.

"You read some of these quotes and it makes your day," says Carly Alsdorf, a 15-year-old sophomore at Columbine High School. "There's that one that says you'll always be a Columbine Rebel, and no one can take that away. And it makes you feel really good."

The school where 12 students and a teacher were killed on April 20, 1999, lies just beyond the rise known as Rebel Hill, which wraps the 6-month-old memorial in its embrace.

Muted, late-afternoon sounds of animated teen chatter, bats hitting baseballs and the rhythmic thunk-thunk of skateboards along pavement barely rise above the gentle murmur of water flowing into a shallow pool.

As its designers intended, it echoes like a soothing soundtrack in the circular space.

"When it first opened, I was crying so bad that people I didn't even know came up and patted me on the back," recalls Megan Koop, a 17-year-old Columbine junior paying an after- school visit with Alsdorf. "But now, it's calming."

Trees planted only months ago remain small and leafless. The perennial plantings so far lend only the slightest hint of color. But people lend life to the memorial — intermittently on these early spring days, pulled to the spot by chance or design or some force they can't quite explain.

For Carol and Fernando Ortiz, whose 3-year-old son, Ethan, dances across the stones engraved with "Never Forgotten" at the memorial's epicenter, this visit represents more than a time to honor the dead.

It's an attempt at understanding.

The couple grew up in Albuquerque but six years ago moved to Littleton, where they've developed a circle of friends whose lives were profoundly influenced by the tragedy.

"We had questions — what it was like, how they felt," says Carol, 28. "We've heard all their stories. But here, I was reading the quotes on the wall and you get a snapshot of their thoughts. For people like us from the outside, this is all we have to tie it all together."

Many reasons for coming

"It definitely gives you goose bumps," adds Fernando, a 26-year-old youth pastor at a nearby church. "We wanted to see it because, even though we weren't born and raised here, this is our home and our community now. This is part of history we're living here."

Visiting friends or relatives ask about Columbine — prompting a trip to the site that's also the first for their hosts. A Columbine student who left long before the shootings ventures back for the first time. A mother pushing a stroller along her regular route through Clement Park inexplicably turns onto a different path.

A nurse who responded to the emergency nine years ago gets off work not far from the area and, for the first time, notices the signs pointing to the memorial.

"It's more in my thoughts this time of year," says Patricia Gordon of Evergreen, who tended to kids and families at nearby Leawood Elementary School on the day of the shootings. "This is what that day was like — cool, crisp, with a hint of spring in the air."

She doesn't come to the park often, and she stops to ponder why she steered herself to the memorial this time. She kept all the newspaper clippings from the tragedy and its aftermath but has never revisited them. Part of the reason she came here today, she decides, was the brilliant spring weather.

The other part has to do with the place.

"It does have a magnetic draw," she says. "I think it's part of the healing process — nationwide."

Noemi Fierro enters the memorial with her brother and his wife and their three kids. Like many visitors, Fierro — recently arrived from Fresno, Calif. — proved the catalyst for local friends or relatives to visit the site.

"I saw it on TV," says Fierro, recalling the long-distance horror of the attack. "My brother, my mom — everybody in my family lives here. Now that I've come here, I told my brother, 'Take me to the place this happened.' "

Likewise, when Ellen Stetzer-Hetrick traveled from Bremerton, Wash., to visit her sister, she suggested a memorial visit. Now, they stand teary-eyed within the inner circle.

"I didn't know these people," says Stetzer-Hetrick, a school counselor. "But it's moving to us to know who they were and what they were thinking about."

She can imagine what the memorial will look like once the plant life is in full bloom, but she finds appreciation for the relatively austere setting of early spring.

"I think it's wonderful right now," she says. "It can be stark — that's OK too."

As the weather warms, caretakers will assess how well the vegetation survived the cold. Volunteers who help with upkeep on the site recently have been mobilized. Some minor fixes that couldn't be done during the winter months now are in the works — stress fractures in concrete near the entrance, a cracked text panel.

There's no means to track the numbers or frequency of visitors. But overseers report — anecdotally, at least — a significant stream, at all hours, since the dedication in September, says Lora Knowlton, executive director of the Foothills Foundation and Columbine Memorial committee member.

No official events this year

There will be no official events at the memorial this year, although something likely will be scheduled for next spring's 10th anniversary.

"It's getting visited on a pretty regular basis," Knowlton says. "And I've heard from some friends that sometimes when there are arguments at home, the memorial is a good place to seek solitude and get perspective. One of the things we wanted the memorial to do is be a place for reflection — not only in everybody's personal lives, but from April of 1999.

"It's working."

Columbine students Alsdorf and Koop reread the community's engraved reflections along the memorial's outer wall, then move inward to the display honoring the dead. They pause for a long time in one spot.

Then they embrace.

They are touched by the engraved name of slain student Lauren Townsend. Like them, she was a Columbine volleyball player. They've met her mother, Dawn Anna, at the banquet for an annual volleyball award given in Lauren's name. In passing, Anna had complimented Alsdorf on her shoes.

Lauren would have loved them, she said.

And now, here, they feel a sudden connection with a girl they never knew.

"You read about the students," says Alsdorf. "But here, you realize what they went through."

Itse aihe Ericistä & Dylanista kiinnostaa aika paljon. Kokoajan löytyy jotain uutta, jota ei ennestään tiedä ja/tai olen todennut oikeaksi, mutta onkin ollut väärää. Tuosta Ericin ja Dylanin ruumiskuvasta, niin kun huhutaan, että Eric olisi ampunut Kleboldin, joka ehkä pitää paikkansa, koska Harris makaa Dylanin takana, joten voi olla niin, että Eric olisi hiipinyt/kävellyt Dylanin taakse, jolloin Dylan olisi kuolleena Ericin edessä ja Dylanin tapon jälkeen Eric olisi tappanut itsensä samaan paikkaan.. oma huomioni vaan..

Todennäköisintä on, että molemmat tekivät itsemurhan. Dylanin ase oli oikeassa kädessä, vaikka Dylan oli vasenkätinen. Tämä on aiheuttanut hämmennystä. Columbinessa kyllä kiersi huhu tapauksen jälkeen, että Eric olisi ajanut Dylania takaa, ja ampunut lopuksi liikuntasalissa.
Sitä olen miettinyt, että tuliko pojille kiire. Jos tuo Lisa Kreutzin muistikuva siitä, että poikia yritettiin puhutella ("Te kaksi kirjastossa") poliisin taholta pitää paikkansa, niin olisiko tullut kiire, antautua he eivät aikoneet.

Yritin epätoivoisesti kahlata tätä ketjua läpi ja suurimman osan ainakin sain läpikäydyksi. Muutama kommentti tän ketjun ja muun netissä liikkuvan Columbine-aineiston pohjalta.

Ensinnäkin tähän viime aikaiseen - uskon molempien tehneen yhteisen itsemurhan. Kuvat, joita nähdään on tosiaan varmaan hiukan siirreltyjä, ja niiden perusteella täydellisen salapoliisityön tekeminen Dylanin ja Ericin kuolemasta on mahdotonta. Eiköhän nuo todistajalausunnot kirjastosta kuitenkin tue tuota molempien itsemurhaa.

Itselle tuli kaiken aineiston pohjalta sellainen fiilis, että Eric tosiaan oli mielisairas. Olen lukenut paljon psykopaateista ja antisosiaalisesta persoonallisuushäiriöstä, ja tuntenutkin yhden tämän diagnoosin saaneen. Kaikilta osin Eric ei kyllä aineiston perusteella sovi APD-tapaukseksi. Vastuuttomuus, piittaaamattomuus ja impulsiivisuus kuuluu olennaisena osana tähän häiriöön. Antisosiaalisen persoonallisuushäiriön omaaavat ovat yleensä täysin kykenemättömiä mihinkään pitkäjänteiseen suunnitteluun. Tässähän tekoa suunniteltiin aika pitkään, valmisteltiinkin aika huolella. Toisaalta sitten on sanottava, että psykologia on aika lailla tieteenä kokeiluasteella - ja juuri näihin psykopaattijuttuihin liittyvistä asioista on aikalailla kiistaa. Kyllähän Eric suurimman osan narsistin piirteistä aiankin täytti esim täältä luettuna http://samvak.tripod.com/

Mulle tuli sellainen tunne, että Dylan puolestaan oli rakastunut Ericiin, ja valmis sen takia seuraamaan tätä minne vaan ja tekemään Ericin miellyttämiseksi mitä vaan. Dylanin promdeittihän oli ihastunut Dylaniin, mutta sanoi, että "I got the feeling that Dylan did not want to get into anything serious in high school". Kuulostaa musta vähän siltä, että Dylan saattoi peitellä homouttaan tuollaisilla kommenteilla. Toi olisi ainakin yksi malli selittää miksi Dylan meni niin pitkälle tässä asiassa. Dylanhan ei ollut erityisen kiusattu, jonkinlaisia kavereita ja jonkunlaista suosiotakin tyttöjen keskuudessa hänellä oli. Miksi hän heitti kaiken menemään? Korkeakouluopiskelijan tulevaisuuden? Tyttöystävän? Muut kaverit? Ovat psykopaatit (jos Eric sellainen oli) toki hyviä manipuloimaan, mutta miksi hän koki Ericin asian niin omakseen?

No, tää oli mun teoria tosta palapelistä. Hupaisaa miten kiinnostavaa on tutkia tuota Columbine-aineistoa - sinne tosiaan kevyesti uppoaa päiväkausiksi.

Kuulostaa musta vähän siltä, että Dylan saattoi peitellä homouttaan ....

Minä en usko että Dylan oli homo. Hän saattoi uskoa olevansa rakastunut Ericiin, kyllä, mutta en usko hänen olleen homo siltikään. Kyseessä oli kuitenkin teini-ikäinen poika, jonka siihenastinen elämä oli ollut kiusaamista ja epävarmuutta, eikä se seksuaalinen suuntautuminen ole ihan selvä kaikille muutenkaan tuossa vaiheessa, saatika että kaikki on hyljeksinyt siihen asti eikä kukaan ole välittänyt. Sitten tulee Eric, muukalainen muualta, joka ottaa Dylanin ystäväkseen, huolehtii ja pitää keskustelua yllä, on myös kiusattu (vai muuttuiko kiusatuksi vasta sen jälkeen kun tutustui Dylaniin?) ja tuntuu olevan samalla aaltopituudella. Helposti muutenkin hieman sekaisin oleva henkilö erehtyy tunteista. Voimakas ystävyys, kiintyminen jne., mutta ei ehkä sittenkään rakkautta.

Kyllähän Ericillä on ihan helvetisti vetovoimaa näin kuoleman jälkeenkin, kun vetää puoleensa haudan takaakin ihmisiä. Hänellä on yhä älyttömästi faneja ja ihailijoita, eivätkä läheskään kaikki sellaisia, jotka haluaisivat toteuttaa kouluammuskelun tai muun vastaavan, vaan ihan tavallisia (teinejä) myös. Näistä kahdesta Eric on aina ollut se suositumpi kuitenkin, enkä yhtään ihmettele, että Dylankin saattoi langeta Ericin vetovoiman piiriin.

Sen verran vaan, itse kun olen hyvin dominoiva persoona niin oikean laisen ihmisen sattuessa kohdalle syntyy räjähdys. Ihan kuin Eric ja Dylan, mullakin oli kouluaikoina ystävä, jonka sain manipuloitua *** ja *** (= jotain rikollisuuksia ja muita tyhmyyksiä). Siinä ystävyydessä oli paljon voimakkaampi side ja tunne, kuin normaalissa vuorovaikutus-kaverisuhteessa, mutta ei se rakkautta ollut sinä mitä sillä tässäkin tarkoitetaan.
No onpas kamalan vaikeasti selitettävissä, mutta meinaan, että ehkä Ericin ja Dylanin välillä oli tän -minunkin kokeman- kaltainen todella syvä ystävyys. Ei rakkautta, vaikka siinäkin tunnetilassa tosin sivuvaikutuksena lähtee usein järki kävelemään.
