"Living in Finland today.
Dear friends, I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you about what is happening in families like Ours here in Finland now. Racism affects many families like Ours, in different ways, and I know that we are not alone. I chose to post this story here in this closed group because I hope to minimize the risk of being subjected to racist and abusive trolling, as has happened to some of my friends recently who chose to speak out about these issues on more widely accessible social media Forums.
My boy, aged 14, is having to learn how racism works, how it affects him, his family and his friends. And how he is going to have to manage it. Two incidents during the last two weeks have brought these issues to our family’s attention. Firstly, about a week ago, my boy was leaving a shopping mall with three Black African girls. As they were at the exit, a possibly drunk, white adult man, blocked their way. Speaking in Finnish, he started to racially abuse the group, shouting “Satan’s Negroes” etc.
At this point, I should add a little context, my boy looks like what now people in Finland would assume to be “white”, although he is often asked where he comes from, as he does not look stereotypically Finnish. At the moment, I would describe his style as a kind of “white boy” hip-hop-hipster with thick curly brown hair who plays basketball and hangs out mostly with the Black kids. Significantly, they are often seen out in public with Black girls.
So, my son, who is usually pretty laid back to the point of passivity (In his dad's opinion!), And certainly non-confrontational, responded in Finnish, with words to the effect, “please leave us alone, please let us pass ”.
The abusive man then aggressively grabbed my boy by the hair shouting “Are you a Negro? !!” My boy could not break free and had to throw a swinging right hander to the side of the man’s head which knocked him back and momentarily stunned him. This seems to have all happened under the gaze of the CCTV cameras. The security guards were there quite quickly. They asked my boy a few questions and then took the abusive man away. That was it.
When we spoke about it later, my boy knows that when the security guards arrived, it may well be that he didn't get into any more trouble, because he is seen as “white”, and in this instance, seen as a young boy, nobly Defending girls against an adult drunken man.
I myself am very sad that this is now happening to my boy and we as a family have to sit down with him and talk about how he can best avoid trouble, motivated because of the way he looks and who he is with. This “racism” affects him in a different way, but he has now been subjected to the same type of racial Assault in public spaces that his father experienced in the 1960’s and 70’s and his grandfather in London in the 1940’s and 50’s. And, the same fear, that if you defend yourself against the aggressor, you yourself will get into trouble.
The second issue is related to the recent media stories about “bullying” in a Helsinki school and the stories circulating in the online social media that “Black” boys “racially” assaulted an innocent “white boy” and that the “politically correct / multicultural ”school and police are doing nothing about it.
My boy witnessed the incident at school. He says that what happened has been grossly exaggerated, although he does not condone it. That the white boy who was the “victim” had been consistently and repeatedly making racist remarks about his fellow pupils. That it was in fact, contrary to the image of being promoted, Mostly black girls, who reacted and confronted the white boy. And it seems that the police feel no further action is necessary and have decided to leave it to the school management to resolve the problem. My boy is quite angry at how the truth of what happened is being twisted to support the racist narrative. Thereforem afraid that this is the reality that families like Ours have to live with, generation after generation. But, at least to Preserve our own sanity, we cannot afford to submit to racism, and continue to speak out against it. Self-defense is no offense."
