The chain sells clothes that are popular in the extreme-right and has traditionally named their shop after the Norwegian cities and towns.
The choice of name creates reactions both locally in the East German city of Chemnitz, where the store opened on Thursday and at the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin, reports the AP.
- We regret greatly that there is created associations to 22 July, said the embassy's press and Cultural Affairs Anne-Kirsti Wendel Karlsen.
The owner of the new enterprise, the firm Mediatex will not comment on why the store has been called "Brevik". Other Thor Steinar-branches have names like "Tonsberg", "Trondheim", "Oseberg", "Haugesund", "Narvik" and "Larvik".
Foreign Ministry in Oslo and the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin has for years tried to stop the use of the Norwegian flag and other symbols in the Norwegian Thor Steinar collections.
- We believe in general that it is regrettable that Norwegian place names and Norway, as such, is associated with Thor Steinar and thus with the extreme-right. We, on behalf of many municipalities urged not to use the Norwegian place names, but unfortunately we have no way to follow it up in the courts, says Karlsen.
The Greens and the Social Democratic SPD are preparing protests against the newly opened store. (© AP)
