Kehlet mystery: Police return to WA outback as investigation into prospecting couple continues

POLICE are no longer ruling out criminality in one of WA’s most baffling mysteries — the death and disappearance of prospecting couple Raymond and Jennie Kehlet.

After receiving information from the public, police will on Monday launch their fifth search of the Sandstone area in a bid to solve the case.

Ten officers will be sent to the outback region on Monday.

The couple was last seen on March 22 at Table Top near Sandstone, 730km northeast of Perth.

Major Crime Detective Superintendent Alan Morton revealed details of the new search at a press conference on Friday morning.

Police were looking to “eliminate criminality” in their investigation and the reasons surrounding Mr Kehlet’s death and Ms Kehlet’s disappearanc


The cause of death for 47-year-old Mr Kehlet is so far “inconclusive”.

“At this stage we look to eliminate criminality within the investigation,” Mr Morton said.

“It is still being treated as a sudden death for Mr Kehlet and the disappearance of Ms Kehlet as a missing person.

“However we are applying all the expected principles for a suspected homicide.”

The former head of Major Crime, Detective Superintendent Anthony Lee, previously insisted: “We are not seeing anything that suggests any criminality.”

On Friday, police issued a plea to help find a 4WD towing a trailer and a quad bike that were seen in the Sandstone area on March 22, the day after the Kehlets were last seen.

It was driving along the Paynes Find/Sandstone Road, south of Sandstone, in the early hours of Sunday March 22.

“The Sandstone area is visited by travellers and prospectors, including many who may have been out of range for significant periods of time or indeed may have since travelled interstate,” Detective Superintendent Alan Morton said.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in this area in mid to late March, who has seen the four-wheel-drive which was towing the quad bike, or has information regarding this tragedy to come forward.”

Mr Kehlet’s body was found in an abandoned 15m-deep mine shaft without his shirt on in April, but there has been no trace of his 49-year-old wife’s whereabouts.

“We now believe it is more of a recovery search and she died sometime in April,” Mr Morton said.

Police have interviewed about 70 witnesses during their investigation, but have no person of interest.

The Kehlets, from Beverley, went prospecting with friend Graham Milne on March 19. Mr Milne claims he last saw the couple at their camp site when he left on his own on March 21.

Ensivaikutelma on ryöstömurha. Kulta saa tekemään raakoja rikoksia ja olihan pariskunnalla arvokkaat detectorit, ja muutakin kalustoa on kadonnut.
Mies on siis löytynyt jo kesäkuussa toistakymmentä metriä syvästä kaivoskuilusta (shaft) lähes alastomana. Säntillisenä aseenkäsittelijänä pidetyn Mr Kehletin ase oli kuitenkin ladattuna auton takapenkiltä.

Pariskunta on siis todistettavasti nähty viimeksi 22.3.-15. He olivat lähteneet liikenteeseen ystävän Graham Milnen kanssa 19.3. Milne sanoon nähneensä heidät viimeksi 21.3. heidän leirintäpaikallaan, lähtiessään omilleen.
