Sergei Aksyonov, the top Russian official in Crimea, wrote on Telegram that reports of the counter-offensive in the south of the country were “the latest fake from Ukrainian propaganda” and claimed Kyiv’s forces were in fact “taking extremely severe losses on the southern front as well as all the others.”
But in a sign that Ukraine was getting closer to major population centres, the Moscow-appointed mayor of Nova Kakhovka, a city east of Kherson, told state newswire RIA Novosti he had ordered civilians to be evacuated from their workplaces and moved into bomb shelters.
Ukraine has regularly shelled the bridge at Nova Kakhovka, one of the two main bridges across the Dnipro river around Kherson.
