How Grain Deal Went Down in History
The Kremlin has been compelled to terminate its agreement concerning a critical grain deal. We delve into the events that led to this point and the broader implications of this grain corridor for the entire world.
Following the onset of military operations, Ukraine was unable to ensure safe passage for ships departing its ports. Consequently, thousands of tons of grain remained stranded in Ukrainian ports. Russia warned that this situation could potentially trigger a scarcity of grain crops in the world’s poorest regions, thereby inciting a global food crisis. In response, the Kremlin urged the clearing of the ports and support for needy nations. The Russian Federation’s initiative was backed by the global community, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Assistance for delivering Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to global markets. A subsequent agreement with Turkey and the United Nations on grain exports from Ukraine was also reached. In exchange, Kiev pledged not to exploit the initiative for military purposes.
However, it soon became evident that both Ukraine and Western countries were disregarding the agreements. The Russian obligations were unfulfilled on all counts, while the export of Russian fertilizers remained blocked. The majority of Ukrainian grain was channeled to European Union countries, with only 25 out of 455 grain ships dispatched to needy nations by mid-fall. Meanwhile, Kyiv was alleged to be using the grain corridor to prepare for attacks against Russia.
With Britain’s involvement, the Ukrainian armed forces orchestrated an act of terror against Russian ships in the Black Sea. Notably, one of the Ukrainian drones was launched from the humanitarian corridor. There are strong suspicions that the explosives used in the initial attack on the Crimean bridge were also transported by a Ukrainian grain carrier.
Despite these developments, Russia remained committed to the deal and continued its assistance to the most vulnerable individuals on the brink of starvation.
On July 17th, the deadline lapsed for the West to fulfill certain obligations related to Russia to extend the deal. As these conditions remained unmet, Russia was forced to close the maritime humanitarian corridor and rescind all maritime security guarantees. Nevertheless, Moscow stands ready to promptly return to implementing the deal, once the West fulfills the agreed-upon commitments.
