What did the bill propose?

Under current Virginia law, third-trimester abortions are only permitted if the risk to the mother's life is "substantial and irremediable" - language that Democrats wanted removed.

The Democratic bill sought to allow for late-term abortions if the mother's physical or mental safety were at risk .

The procedure would also have required sign-off by only one doctor, rather than the three required under existing law.

What did Democrats say?

Virginia's Democratic Governor Ralph Northam defended the bill in an interview to radio station WTOP.

The paediatric neurologist said the measure allowed termination "in cases where there may be severe deformities" or when there is a "foetus that's not viable" outside the womb.

"So in this particular example, if a mother's in labour, I can tell you exactly what would happen," he told WTOP's Ask the Governor programme Wednesday.

"The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother."

After Republicans accused him of advocating for infanticide in his remarks, his spokeswoman said that he was only discussing cases of "tragic or difficult circumstances, such as a nonviable pregnancy or in the event of severe foetal abnormalities".

"The governor's comments were limited to the actions physicians would take in the event that a woman in those circumstances went into labour."

Ultimately, the former president’s rambling answers, repeated blatant falsehoods and consistent interruption hurt him on Tuesday night.

“Make no mistake about it, Trump had a bad night,” Brit Hume said on Fox News.

Where Harris presented clear and direct policies on the economy, immigration, abortion and more, the former president gave into her baiting of him and delivered familiar rambling remarks. He spoke about “migrant crime”, false claims about late-term abortions, inflation, his criminal trials and the 2020 election – all topics he brings up in press conferences and rallies.

“We heard so many of the old grievances that we long thought that Trump had learned were not winners, politically,” Hume said.

Fox News commentators: ‘Tonight, she won’

Some commentators on Fox News, a conservative TV network, said in post-debate comments that Kamala Harris won her debate against Donald Trump.

She was “well prepared, had answers and knew where she was going,” said Fox political analyst Brit Hume. He compared Harris’s debate performance with an interview she and vice presidential nominee Tim Walz gave on CNN last month, calling her “a different person” tonight.

Hume also indicated that Harris managed to derail Trump at various points throughout the debate.

“She baited him – successfully,” Hume said. “She came out ahead in this, in my opinion. No doubt.”

Hume added that Trump had a “bad night”.

“Tonight, she won,” echoed Harold Ford Jr, another commentator.

Kamala Harris baited Donald Trump for nearly all of the 1 hour and 45 minutes of their first and potentially only debate on Tuesday night – and Trump took every bit of it.

Trump was often out of control. He loudly and repeatedly insisted that a whole host of falsehoods were true. The former president repeated lies about widespread fraud in the 2020 election. He parroted a conspiracy theory about immigrants eating pets, and lied about Democrats supporting abortions after babies are born – which is murder, and illegal everywhere.

He painted a dire picture of the United States, reminiscent of the “American carnage” he’d warned of when he was inaugurated in 2017.

“We have a nation that is dying,” Trump said Tuesday night.

As the debate ended, Harris got another boost: Musician and pop culture icon Taylor Swift posted on Instagram that she was backing the Democratic ticket. She signed her post “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady” — a reference to controversial comments by Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, that have alienated many women.

Over half of debate watchers think Harris won: Poll

A majority of debate watchers think Harris won the debate against Trump, according to a poll taken by CNN and SSRS after the debate.

On who won the debate, 63% of debate watchers said Harris and 37% said Trump.

The poll has a margin of error of +/- 5.3% points.

CNN said that before the debate, respondents were split 50%-50% on who would win.

In June, their instant poll found that among debate watchers, 33% thought Biden won and 67% thought Trump won.
