Man sentenced after pleading guilty in St. Louis crash that killed 5 family members

Marshawn Stepney, 21, was sentenced to 25 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to five counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, one count of first-degree tampering and one count of felony leaving the scene of a crash.

On May 6, 2022, Stepney was driving a stolen gray 2015 Jeep Cherokee linked to several vehicle thefts in the area. The Jeep sideswiped a gray Infiniti QX56 near the intersection of Delmar Boulevard and Union and drove off. The driver of the Infiniti called the police, and a passenger in the Jeep fired shots at the Infiniti.

When officers arrived, they deployed spike strips to slow the Jeep, but Stepney kept driving, reaching 80 miles per hour on Delmar. The Jeep then crashed into a minivan near the intersection of Delmar and Pendleton.

Five people who were inside the minivan were killed in the crash. They were identified as Lahronda Simmons, 34, Luther Simmons, 44, Ephriam Simmons, 47, Anngelique Simmons, 52, and Takira Thompson, 11. An 8-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl were injured in the crash and taken to the hospital.

After the crash, police said that Stepney ran off but returned to the crash scene and asked a homeowner to call his mother to pick him up. Police identified him as the suspect from the video and other evidence. He was arrested 12 days after the crash.

Police arrested two others in connection with the fatal crash.

Jayden Holland was charged with five counts of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and six counts of felony stealing.

Walter Burton was also charged with five counts of second-degree murder as well as theft-related crimes.
