OPD: Teen breakup led to triple homicide
ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- While many details surrounding a triple homicide that took place in Odessa Tuesday evening have not yet been released, a clearer picture has emerged after the father of the slain children launched a fundraiser to help honor his 9-year-old son, 13-year-old daughter, and their mother.
Around 5:45 p.m. on December 9, officers with the Odessa Police Department were called to the 87th Street Apartments, located at 8740 Hunter Miller Way to investigate a shooting. Inside an apartment, officers found three victims who had been shot to death.
OPD confirms triple homicide, suspect in custody
A suspect, identified as a 15-year-old boy, ran from the scene, but was quickly apprehended. His name has not been released to the public, but we do know he’s been detained in the Ector County Youth Center and has been charged with three counts of Capital Murder of Multiple Persons, a Capital Felony.
In a news release Wednesday, OPD said that the suspect had planned on shooting his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend outside of school but changed his mind and went to her home instead. There, the boy entered the residence and shot his ex-girlfriend’s mother, identified as 39-year-old Jessica Rodriguez. The teen then shot his ex-girlfriend’s 9-year-old brother and 13-year-old sister.
In a Gofundme, Roy Martinez said of his young children and ex-wife, “This is something that no one can really prepare themselves for because we don’t expect this kind of tragedy to happen to any of us. I am not a person who ever asks for help from anyone, but at this time, I don’t have a choice.”
